The Bible Or The TV

Only 19% of church goers read the Bible personally every day. 3% of teenagers read the Bible every day. Americans watch an average of 5 hours of TV per day.

Before I received Christ I watched plenty of TV and did not read the Bible at all. The first evening after I became saved I began reading the Bible as the TV was playing in my living room. I am amazed that the TV could not divert my attention from the Bible. It certainly does that now. After more than three decades as a believer I love the Bible more and I am repulsed by most of what is on TV. I prefer to watch Biblical TV, occasional news, sports events or other wholesome programming. Much of the time I fall asleep while those things are on.

John 10:27: My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:

Often I have a sense that the Lord wants me to follow Him and turning the TV off or not turning it on at all is the first step. A bit of quiet time praying, thinking about Him or reading the Bible are now delightful to me.

Psalms 119:97: O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day.

Job 23:12: Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.

Psalms 1:1: Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. 2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. 3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. 4 The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.

John 8:32: And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

John 17:17: Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

Proverbs 28:9: He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer shall be abomination.

I am thankful that the Lord has given me an increasing desire for the Bible and an increasing understanding of what is evil on TV, what He wants me to avoid and what little of it there is that He wants me to watch. He wants to do those things for you too. Has He been bringing you away from the TV and into the Bible and into His will for your life? Are you growing into the Bible? Do you ever escape from the TV? Do you want to? Are you listening to the Lord or are you listening to Satan? Are you giving your time to the Lord or are you giving it to Satan?

John 10:27a: My sheep hear my voice, . . .
